There’s something especially joyful about combining creative techniques to make something meaningful—and fun! My latest project has been exactly that: a handmade treasure chest of ABC coasters, blending machine embroidery and laser cutting into one playful and practical design.
Each coaster is part of a carefully embroidered alphabet series I’ve been stitching, with pictures and words to accompany each letter. From “A for apple” to “Z for zebra” and beyond, each square is a tactile learning tool—and a little piece of art in its own right. I wanted a special way to store and present them, especially for little hands eager to explore and learn. That’s when the pirate box idea came to life!
The box itself is laser cut and hand-painted in a calm nautical blue. To give it character, I added charming little laser-engraved pirate figures on the front and lid. They bring a friendly sense of adventure—just the sort of guardians you’d want for your ABC “treasure.” Inside, the embroidered coasters fit perfectly, each nestled in neatly, ready to be discovered one by one.
This project was as much about playfulness as it was about craftsmanship. It allowed me to combine several of my favourite things: the precision of machine embroidery, the endless possibilities of laser cutting, and the delight of creating something for a child’s learning journey.
I imagine a curious little explorer lifting the lid, pulling out coasters, one by one, learning letters and words in their own rhythm. Maybe one day it’ll be a keepsake to remember those early learning days—complete with pirates and all.
Stay tuned—I’m slowly working my way through the alphabet, and there might be more themed boxes to come!
