One of my favourite things about having grandchildren is finding little ways to make things just for them. Recently I embroidered a bodysuit for my four-month-old granddaughter, and I decided to keep it very simple and playful.
Instead of long phrases, I chose tiny toddler-style words that feel cheerful and full of personality. I stitched them in both English and Afrikaans, which made the project feel even more special.
The words I used were:
Yay! – Jippie!
Play! – Speel!
Love! – Lief!
Hug! – Drukkie!
Nap! – Slaap!

They’re the sort of words that fit perfectly into a baby’s world — cuddles, naps, playtime, and lots of love.
Because the words are so short, they work beautifully for machine embroidery on baby clothes. They stitch quickly and look sweet scattered across a little garment without overwhelming it. I kept the font soft and simple so the focus stayed on the words themselves.
I also love the idea that she’ll grow up seeing and hearing both languages around her. Even something as small as a few embroidered words can quietly celebrate that connection.
Projects like this are a good reminder that handmade gifts don’t need to be complicated. Sometimes the tiniest ideas turn out to be the most meaningful.
And I have a feeling this won’t be the last little embroidered outfit she receives from me.
